Edge cloud – The Future of Cloud Computing

Edge Cloud

There has been a lot of noise about how the edge will replace the cloud and I previously wrote about this in one of my blog posts. I explained that edge and cloud are technologies that go hand-in-hand and the edge is not completely going to replace the cloud, just diversify its existing structure. The market of the edge although is set to surpass that of the cloud. Cloud will still be the backbone of all the computing that is moving to the edge.

Here I am explaining Edge Cloud, which is the architecture that decentralizes the processing power of our existing network. Edge cloud creates a layered architecture of network connecting the centralized data center with multiple edge data centers.

What are the Advantages of Edge Cloud?

Edge Cloud is well-positioned for distributed data collection points, immediate processing, and data analysis. Therefore the edge cloud model has applications in all industry verticals where the cloud is prevalent, including healthcare, banking, manufacturing, education, etc.

Edge cloud enables a model where instead of connecting to a central server, the users are connected to smaller processing units near them. Edge could landscape allows millions of IoT devices to build a huge smart network and transfer only the analysis to the central location.

The Advantages of Edge Cloud:

  1. It decentralizes the core computing solution, thus, limiting a major bottleneck preparing the data processing for the technologies and devices of the future.
  2. Data transmission is the stage where data is the most vulnerable, and edge cloud makes the data safer by reducing transmission and using CDN for the remaining transfers.
  3. It uses a fraction of bandwidth used with centralized units hence, making the edge cloud solution pocket-friendly.
  4. The steep reduction in movement of data will result in reduced congestion, latency, and cost in turn increasing the safety for data. It will eliminate problems associated with centralized cloud systems.
  5. It will also increase the flexibility, reliability, and scalability of the data processing solutions.
  6. It will eliminate latency which will make technologies life 5G possible.

Being equipped with artificial intelligence, edge cloud will be able to make decisions on its own, so that physical security will become a remote concept.

The edge cloud has been designed as a system of open and interconnected data centers. As a fairly new concept, it has certain aspects that will unveil themselves as we start using the technology. But the one thing that is quite certain about is edge is that it will bring the data processing closer to the user; it might be located in a town nearby or just across the street. This will enable hosting of persistent, on-demand applications in strict latency restraint. It will use caching that responds to and anticipates local streaming demands. It is the viable future of cloud computing.

The edge cloud will also be fundamental to the evolution of networks to enable necessary security to support new services and applications, opening several new verticals to business opportunities. By starting now to prepare and implement edge infrastructure, we can begin to address these opportunities and be ready for the next evolutionary steps of their networks, including 5G.
