Pratyush and Mihir Make it to the Global List of Top 100 Supercomputers (Data Center built by Prasa)

Pratyush and Mihir (meaning ‘The Sun’), the two fastest supercomputers in India have now made it to the global list of top 100 supercomputers. Prasa Infocom & Power Solutions had partnered with Cray Inc. earlier this year to build them for Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Govt. department of India, to improve computational power and provide more accurate and reliable weather, climate, ocean, and seismological forecasts.

Prasa has designed and implemented data center for these supercomputers in two different divisions of MoES in India. Pratyush with a capacity of 4 petaflops ranks 39th and is situated at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) in Pune. Whereas, Mihir with a capacity of 2.8 petaflops ranks 66th and is located at the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) in Noida.

The data center built for the two supercomputers is one of the country’s largest with Per Rack Load 77kW and the most energy efficient with Power Utilization Efficiency (PUE) of 1.27. Executing the project in the assigned time was a challenging task, but with a team of dedicated personnel working at the sites relentlessly, Prasa delivered it in less than 120 days.
